NEW RELATIONSHIP TO BENEFIT TERRITORIANS
Chief Minister Paul Henderson has described discussions with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as constructive and productive.
Mr Henderson had discussions with Mr Rudd last night and at Parliament House in Darwin this morning.
“This morning’s meeting highlighted a positive change toward a stronger, more collaborative relationship between the Commonwealth and the Territory, and that’s good news for Territorians,” Mr Henderson said.
“Our discussions covered a range of range of issues including:
- the economic development of Northern Australia, including gas;
- education initiatives; and
- the rolling out of the new Federal Government election commitments in the Territory, especially the new arrangements in health.
“In terms of the Federal intervention, I stressed the Territory’s desire to have a productive relationship with the Commonwealth based on collaboration and respect.
“These early meetings with the Prime Minister and Minister Macklin yesterday are important to getting the relationship right and in ensuring governments at both levels are working together to address indigenous disadvantage.
“I welcome the Prime Minister’s interests in the Territory and these early steps in developing a new relationship which I am confident will deliver benefits for Territorians,” Mr Henderson said.
