Karl Hampton was elected to Parliament as the Member for Stuart on 23 September 2006 following the retirement of Dr Peter Toyne.
Karl Hampton was born in Alice Springs on August 4, 1968. He is of Warlpiri, Mara/Yanyuwa, Ngulikan, Afghan and Scottish heritage.
Karl is married to Rebecca Trindle. They have three sons.
Karl thinks of himself as just another bloke from the Gap - prepared to have a go in helping his community and the Northern Territory, following in the footsteps of many great leaders who have come from the Centre.
Starting at the built up edges of Alice Springs, Stuart stretches north along the Stuart Highway to just south of Barrow Creek, also including some remote communities north-east of Alice Springs along the Sandover Highway. North-west of Alice Spring, the electorate extends along the Tanami Road to Yuendumu and further north, traversing the Tanami Desert to include Kalkarindji and Top Springs in the Victoria River district. The electorate covers 326,960 sq.km, with 84% of the electorate's population of indigenous origin. The electorate is named after John McDouall Stuart, the explorer who passed through the district in 1861 and 1862 on his expedition to find a route from South Australia to the north coast of Australia.
