The Northern Territory Labor Party has several types of policy statements. There are Conference endorsed policies, called Platform, which have been prepared by elected platform committees, and formally endorsed at a Territory Labor Conference.
In addition to Platform, Labor Members of Parliament develop policies to take to Territory elections. These policies are the specific and more immediate programmes we expect to implement in Government.
Every two years our Branch Conference determines to adopt new platform statements, which are broad and general views about the direction we want to take in each policy area.
These can cover both Territory and Federal policy areas, but focus mostly on Territory issues. Territory Branch policy on federal matters is referred to National Conference for consideration for inclusion in the National Australian Labor Party Platform.
At the Territory level, the branch develops policy through policy committees and Territory Conference, and also on a day to day basis through the Chief Minister, Cabinet and the Parliamentary Caucus.
Policy committees are made up of members of the Labor Party, plus two Labor Members of Parliament.
The current list of Northern Territory policy committees is:
- Regional Development
- Mines and Energy
- Indigenous Affairs
- Environment and Heritage
